ArenaNet has another awesome gift for Guild Wars 2 players who decide to pop in during the popular game’s 10th anniversary celebration. This week’s update grants everyone a Black Lion Special Mount Selection License that allows you to pick one mount skin from the vast selection of pre-End of Dragons skins available in the decade-old MMORPG.
Not every mount skin will be available, however, with event-themed skins, those that came with various bundles, and the extremely rare standalone mount skins noticeably absent from the selection. Still, there’s lots of skins to choose that you can use on one mount that you own for every character on the account.
You’ll be able to claim the Selection License for the next three weeks. The license can be stored in your in-game mail until you’re ready to make the impossible decision of choosing just one skin out of the many mount skins up for grabs.
There are also other free items available in the cash shop, including a bonfire buff and a makeover kit, which you can grab for 0 gems to celebrate Guild Wars 2’s 10th birthday.
A vast army of Horde and Alliance players have descended on World of Warcraft Classic to take on the Lich King following the release of the Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch last night. The mass influx of players resulted in horrific queues on both the existing and fresh start realm which, at one point, even reached over 34,000 players. That’s roughly 15 hours of wait time.
Naturally, this has caused a lot of grumbling and complaints, especially after the scheduled downtime already went on longer than expected. But for some, the queues were worth braving for the big dose of nostalgia that the expansion offered. Players even reminisced about the extreme lengths they had to go through just to get into the game when Wrath of the Lich King first launched nearly 15 years ago.
For those who managed to get in, however, their experience was spoiled by a buggy LFG tool which is intended to replace the original dungeon finder system that was removed from the expansion. Several players reported being automatically assigned a tank role regardless of what role they selected and disruptive UI changes when they did actually wanted to be a tank.
Without the dungeon finder system and a broken LFG tool, the LFG chat is now being spammed with messages from players looking to party up. In some ways, it makes the entire experience a faithful rendition of what it was like to play World of Warcraft back in 2008 but, and I believe I speak for every other player in the game, things would have been much better if they hadn’t removed the dungeon finder in the first place.
If you’d rather skip the early game and would rather start with a Death Knight, Blizzard is selling Northrend Heroic Upgrade character boosts that automatically brings one non-Death Knight character up to level 70 with corresponding gear and skills unlocked, faction and race-specific mounts, and a bit of gold to help you get off to a running start. The upgrades are available in $50 and $80 varieties with the exclusive Whalebone Glider flying mount included in the more expensive version.
You’ll find the schedule of events leading up to Wrath of the Lich King Classic’s official launch and the opening of Naxxramas and other endgame dungeons in the launch roadmap below.
Dungeons and Dragons Online brings more variety and complexity to its already complex class system with the release of Update 56: Archetypes & Archvillains today. Headlining the update are the new class Archetypes which come with a whole new set enhancement trees and skills to allow players to further customize their builds.
Update 56 also revamps the Temple of Elemental Evil dungeon, breaking it up into smaller quests, streamlining the quest flow, and rebalancing both scripted and random encounters within the instance. The update also introduces major balance changes to several races and classes which has received a lot of criticism from the community.
Players are questioning the rationale for the balance changes which has apparently shifted the whole gameplay dynamic. Some players have even decided to just leave the game altogether until the perceived problems are fixed. Others argue about the necessity of the Temple of Elemental Evil revamp and that the update itself has been pushed out too fast.
Standing Stone Games has yet to comment on the issues, but you can dive in right now to check out the changes for yourself and let us know what you think in the comments section below. You can also browse through the full patch notes on the Dungeons and Dragons Online official site.
While the question of why Activision Blizzard decided to merge with Microsoft is easy enough to answer given the company’s current predicament, the reason behind the latter’s decision to acquire the controversial company still remains a mystery… until today.
In an interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer revealed that the decision to acquire Activision Blizzard was primarily driven by Microsoft’s desire to secure a foothold in the highly-profitable mobile gaming market. Activision Blizzard, as you probably know, also owns King, the creator of the extremely popular Candy Crush mobile puzzle game. Blizzard Entertainment’s portfolio of high-grossing PC games came second on the list.
“The biggest gaming platform on the planet is mobile phones,” Spencer said. “One and a half billion people play on mobile phones. And I guess, regretfully as Microsoft, it’s not a place where we have a native platform as gaming. Coming from console and PC, we don’t have a lot of creative capability that has built hit mobile games.”
“One thing about the video game space is if you’ve been around maybe too long, you know most of the creators out there. So you kind of know teams that could be a good fit in terms of what we were trying to do,” he added. “But we really started the discussions, internally at least, on Activision Blizzard around the capability they had on mobile and then PC with Blizzard.”
Spencer also talked about the history of Microsoft Gaming and how it was initially started as a defense against consoles taking over the PC market. He also touched on the recent controversies and scrutiny surrounding big tech companies and the regulation of huge deals like their ongoing merger with Activision Blizzard.
“Big deals should be scrutinized,” said Spencer. “I think that’s the role of regulators [and] why they’re in place. I feel good about the progress that we’ve been making, asking good, hard questions about: Ok, what’s our intent? If we play it out over five years is this constricting the market?”
On the topic of constricting markets, Spencer says that previous antitrust allegations against the company taught them a lesson that has stuck with them until today as one of the biggest advocates of cross-platform play.

Co-op shooters are looking to make a comeback as yet another addition to the sub-genre comes to Steam next month called Rift Sweepers. The upcoming third-person shooter is being developed by South Korean action RPG studio Jofsoft and will pit teams of up to four players against interdimensional errmm… things.
The game’s Steam blurb doesn’t really elaborate on what you’ll be shooting down together with your friends except that they have different weaknesses that you’ll need to find to quickly kill them. Missions will involve completing a list of objectives while eliminating monster hordes of various shapes and sizes. Players will be able to choose from four playable classes which include the agile Rifleman, the sniper-like Sharpshooter, the mini-gun toting Demolisher, and the turret-installer and resident buffer, the Engineer.
Rift Sweepers will be launching into Early Access on Steam on September 8th with a full release slated for March 2023. You can check out the game’s official Early Access launch trailer below.
Atomic Heart is an upcoming first-person shooter from Russian development studio Mundfish that explores an alternate version of the 1950s where the USSR managed to get hold of hyper-advanced technology following the conclusion of World War II. This has led to the establishment of a seemingly perfect utopian society where robots have made life easier, everyone is happy, and science is king. But progress has its price, and things suddenly take a turn for the worse.
“Robots designed to help humans have rebelled against their creators. Secret experiments have led to the emergence of terrifying mutants,” Mundfish said. “You are Agent Major P-3 and you will have to find out what is really lying behind the utopian dream. Giant machines and bloodthirsty creatures are just a few of the obstacles that stand between you and the completion of your secret mission.”
The game gives off a strong Bioshock vibe from its premise down to its visuals. It’s currently listed as single-player on Steam although the studio has already revealed plans to add PvP multiplayer and possibly a co-op mode. According to PCGamer, the PvP area will be accessible through a secret railway that will transport players to a special region where they can battle other players. The game’s Discord community, however, is extremely skeptical that the game will feature multiplayer at launch if it gets multiplayer at all.
Still, Atomic Heart is probably worth checking out once it launches on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in Q4 2022.
Hanbitsoft and IMC Games have resurfaced three years after announcing that they were working on a mobile version of Granado Espada, an MMORPG set during Europe’s Age of Exploration that first launched in North America in 2007 and is still available on Steam to this day.
The mobile port, titled Granado Espada M, is essentially the same game built from the ground up for mobile devices with the same Baroque-inspired art style and the ability to control three characters at once. A new press release from the developers offers more details about the upcoming game along with a pair of screenshots showing off the five basic classes that will be available on launch – the Fighter, Musketeer, Wizard, Warlock, and Scout – and a promise that they will remain faithful to the original game.
Unfortunately, the team has yet to announce a release date for the game in South Korea, let alone a global release date. However, fans can take comfort in the fact that the game is still in development and that it’s still coming at some point in the future.
Back 4 Blood has spewed out a new DLC today called Children of the Worm that comes with a new campaign act, new enemies, new weapons, and a new character in the form of a mustached prophet of the apocalypse named Dan.
“Children of the Worm features a brand-new Campaign story – Act 5 that puts you into an epic showdown with a fierce new enemy threat. To help combat this unknown adversary, this expansion will introduce ‘Prophet’ Dan, a gun-toting, self-proclaimed preacher of the end times, who joins our growing list of Cleaners in their effort to save humanity.”
In Act 5, players will go up against zombie-loving cultists in addition to the undead swarms that they’ve faced in previous campaign acts. The new campaign features six new chapters for players to complete along with new weapons that they can use against the Ridden and their deranged supporters. The scripture-spitting Prophet Dan will also be joining the fray to save his flock from the new pro-zombie threat.
Children of the Worm is now available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S with a $15 price tag.
