Zenith Brought Down By DDoS Attacks After Announcing Server Closures

Zenith: The Last City was hit by multiple DDoS attacks yesterday that caused the VR MMORPG’s servers to go down for a couple of hours. The attacks started Wednesday night and continued until the Tuesday morning when Ramen VR deployed a hotfix that ultimately put a stop to the malicious attacks.
Ramen VR is continuing to monitor the situation but the servers are now back to their normal operations. The team also assured players that no account data was compromised during the attacks.
The attacks were presumably in response to the studio’s announcement that it will be closing down nearly half of their servers to ensure a healthier population. Note that character transfers or server merges will not be needed as the game allows players to freely move between different servers and regions.
Before you jump into conclusions, the team isn’t shutting down the servers for lack of players. They’re basically just consolidating players into fewer servers following an infrastructure upgrade that increased their capacity.
“When we first launched the game, we had players spread over dozens of servers, but we’ve heard a lot of feedback that bigger is not necessarily better,” said Ramen VR. “A lot of players have picked a shard and found it pretty empty because everyone was on different shards at the time. Since the Celestial Throne dropped we’ve also been spending a lot of time behind the scenes working on our infrastructure. We now have shards that can handle more players for longer periods of time. As a result, we’re going to remove a number of shards on August 15, 2022 to improve player experience.”
A total of 16 servers will be shut down (13 in the US and 3 in Europe) bringing the number of available servers down to 24. Meanwhile, the community is still waiting on the promised PC version.
