Warhammer Odyssey Abruptly Shuts Down Following March’s Security Breach

Yet another Warhammer MMORPG has shut down as Warhammer Odyssey unceremoniously closed its doors this weekend. According to developer Virtual Realms, the mobile MMORPG’s abrupt closure was brought about by several factors, from development challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to the cyberattacks and security breach that forced the team to take the servers offline since mid-March.
“The past few years have been incredibly challenging for everyone, including the teams here at Virtual Realms,” said the studio. “It is with a heavy heart that we must regrettably inform you [that] we have reached the decision not to continue development of Warhammer: Odyssey.”
“Whilst ideally we would like to leave the servers up for a period to give those of the community who wish to a chance to say farewell, unfortunately the circumstances are such that this is not viable,” they added.
The security breach in question reportedly gave the hackers access to Odyssey’s source code, as well as the source code of the studio’s other games, including Celtic Heroes and an in-development play-to-earn game called Legends of Elumia. To add insult to injury, the hackers also changed character names to “Mr. Putin” as reported by MMO Fallout following the incident.
Warhammer Odyssey was first announced in August 2019 and soft-launched globally on Android and iOS devices in February 2021. At the time of its release, the community had high hopes for the mobile spin-off, which, unlike most mobile MMORPG’s, was completely devoid of any auto-play features. The lack of regular updates, however, quickly became its downfall.
