Torchlight Frontiers Is Now Torchlight 3, Releasing in 2020

Perfect World Entertainment announced today that the third game in the Torchlight franchise has had its name changed from Torchlight Frontiers to Torchlight 3. Besides improving clarity, the new name also marks a significant change in focus.

Torchlight Frontiers was to be a much more MMO like experience than the previous titles in the Torchlight series. The plan was for Frontiers to be a free to play experience with an in-game shop for cosmetics and convenience items. Torchlight 3 will now be a standard 'premium' box purchase with a one-time upfront cost and no cash shop. The developers have also removed the game's horizontal progression and scaling systems, replacing it with a much more traditional ARPG system based on 'Acts' ala Diablo.

Torchlight 3 still supports multiplyer, with shared town hubs and instanced private combat areas. A singleplayer option has also been added. Characters created in singleplayer mode will not be able to play online.

The Steam page is already up for Torchlight 3 and is currently the only available store front for the title. Even PWE's own Arc service no longer has the game listed.

Closed Alpha testing for Torchlight 3 starts on January 29, with a full release scheduled for summer 2020.
