The Server-Wide Twisted Marionette Encounter Returns To Guild Wars 2 Next Week

ArenaNet will be bringing back what veteran Guild Wars 2 players believe is one of the best encounters in the game – Living World Season 1’s the Twisted Marionette. The encounter was originally part of The Origins of Madness release back in 2014 and was only available for a limited time because of how Living World episodes were designed back then.

Season 1 episodes temporarily changed the appearance of certain existing zones as part of the story arc. The season’s finale featured a massive battle against Tyria’s warriors and the arch-villain Scarlet Briar in Lion’s Arch that resulted in the complete destruction of the city. Lion’s Arch would later be redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up.

Subsequent seasons added permanent content and zones which allows players to revisit them anytime they want. Season 1, however, is all but lost except for NPCs whose only job is to recount the season’s events, Fractals, and Visions of the Past quests. This also the reason why ArenaNet’s Living World Return event started with Season 2 instead of Season 1.

Starting next week, players will once again be able to take on the Twisted Marionette in a massive boss fight that will require the entire world’s population to work together to complete objectives.

“Scarlet Briar terrorized Lornar’s Pass with her watchwork superweapon, the Twisted Marionette, shortly before her devastating assault on the city of Lion’s Arch. Tyria’s heroes organized a rapid counterassault, severed its chain tethers, and reduced it to an ominous but inert pile of scrap.

Those who fought the Twisted Marionette years ago still remember—and so do the Mists. Travel to the Eye of the North with your squad and bring the marionette down once more to stop its memory from reinforcing itself in reality.”

The Twisted Marionette returns on July 13 as a bonus event that will run until July 20, after which the boss fight will be permanently available as a squad mission.

In the meantime, players can still claim their free Living World episode until July 11. This week’s free episode is Season 3’s second episode: Rising Flames. You can also watch the video below for a preview of the upcoming encounter.
