Offworld Industries were originally over 15 of the developers who worked on the Battlefield 2 mod, Project Reality. They formed Offworld Industries in 2014 to create a spiritual successor to the mod as a standalone product in Unreal Engine 4. That successor, called Squad, ran a successful Kickstarter campaign in June of 2014, raking in over $325,000. Now, over a year later, the release date is finally here.

Offworld Industries will release their 100-player tactical shooter into Early Access on Steam on December 15th. At release, it will cost prospective players $39.99 to buy the game. If you purchase the game in advance through the official website, however, you can gain access to the Early Access build for only $30. Pre-purchases will only be available until November 30th, so you only have eight more days to decide if you want to pre-purchase the game at a discount.

Five maps will be available at the Early Access launch, with two new reveals. Of the new reveals, one will be a 16km² map based on a "real world location in Afghanistan." The other map will be "a firing range/close quarter combat training map for rehabilitation of gamers who are unaccustomed to proper tactical squad based CQB gaming." Four factions will be playable on each map. With this update, Offworld Industries have revealed the Russian Ground Forces—pictured above—and the Irregular Militia for the first time.

Four game modes will be playable. Advance and Secure is an objective-based game mode where players build and supply bases as a secondary objective, allowing use of the "dozen plus kits available." Conquest is an objective-based game mode where teams "vie for control of all objectives simultaneously." Insurgency features "conventional forces" taking "mechanized infantry patrols" into insurgent territory in order to destroy weapons caches. Insurgents are given "broad leeway to use guerrilla tactics" to defend themselves in this mode. The final mode is Territory Control, in which the conventional forces must "apply boots on the ground" to "secure total control of the terrain in towns, one square meter at a a time."

As an added bonus, the team at Offworld Industries revealed that Scott Tobin would be the game's composer. You can hear the first revealed song in the video below. This song will be used in highlight reels in the first clan vs clan tournament that starts on December 5th with Founders and backers.
