Skull and Bones might just finally be moving on to closed beta testing after having been delayed six times since it was first announced at E3 2017. Ubisoft even opened pre-orders for the highly-awaited pirate MMORPG but quietly refunded all purchases a few months later.

However, it looks like Ubisoft is finally ready to take the next step in the game’s development as it announces the start of closed beta testing on August 25th. Unfortunately, the game has apparently been scaled back from a full-fledged MMO to a multiplayer pirate open-world game, as revealed in the official announcement post.

Senior Producer Neven Dravinski also revealed that they’ve added new content to the game based on feedback from the Insider Program. The servers have also been tweaked to handle up to 20 players who’ll be able to group up in crews of three.

“We are creating even more depth to the combat by increasing the number of ship and weapon variants available at launch, allowing players to build customized playstyles to make the game experience their own,” Dravinski said. “This depth in combat also extends to other aspects of the game.”

“Answering another community request, we’ve ensured that the entire game can be played in co-op, with shareable contracts and rewards; a ‘call for help’ feature should you run into trouble; multiple chat functions; and other gameplay mechanics,” the producer added.

Pre-orders are live again and aspiring testers can now sign-up for the upcoming closed beta on the Skull and Bones official site.
