Are you ready to take on the undead? Arkane Studios’ highly-awaited vampire co-op shooter game has finally launched on PC, Xbox, and Game Pass. But is it worth the hype? Unfortunately, it seems that Redfall has fallen short of expectations.

With a price tag of $70, Redfall offers players the chance to fight against vampires terrorizing the titular small island town in Massachusetts. The game was heavily promoted by Microsoft and Bethesda Softworks, but the critical response has been lackluster. The Xbox Series X version has received a Metacritic score of only 64, with some reviewers criticizing the poor optimization, repetitive gameplay, and lackluster looter shooter mechanics.

One of the biggest problems with Redfall is that it’s specifically designed for co-op play. Characters are meant to complement each other's abilities, which can make the game difficult and frustrating for solo players, or even those who play with random strangers online. If you don’t have at least one other friend to team up with, you may quickly find yourself outnumbered and overwhelmed.

The lukewarm reception of Redfall highlights a bigger issue for Microsoft and Xbox. With Halo developer 343 Industries undergoing a reorganization, the company is in dire need of a big hit. Redfall was supposed to be one of the highlights of its 2023 release calendar, but, sadly, it hasn’t delivered. Microsoft has two more AAA titles lined up for release this year: Forza Motorsport and Bethesda’s Starfield. Hopefully, they’ll be the big hits that will put Microsoft and Xbox back on the map.

In the end, Redfall may not be the vampire-slaying game that players were hoping for. But with other highly-anticipated games on the horizon, there’s still hope for Xbox to come out on top.
