Larian Studios Is Moving Away From Baldur’s Gate And Dungeons & Dragons Games

It’s been an incredible run for the Baldur’s Gate franchise, but all good things must eventually come to an end. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke revealed at GDC earlier this week that they’re partnership with Wizards of the Coast has ended and that they’ll be moving away from the Dungeons & Dragons universe despite the overwhelming success of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Vincke also dashed any hopes of the award-winning game getting an expansion. “Baldur’s Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We’ll forever be proud of it but we’re not going to continue in it,” he said. “We’re not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from D&D and we're going to start making a new thing.”
Don’t worry, there’ll undoubtedly be other studios who’ll be carrying the Dungeons & Dragons torch in the future, including Gameloft who recently partnered with Wizards of the Coast to develop a new co-op survival life sim based on the iconic tabletop RPG.
It’s unclear how long Larian Studios is planning to support Baldur’s Gate 3. For now, it’s still getting new content updates, so enjoy it while it lasts.
