VR MMORPG Ilysia is finally ready to take its first step into beta nearly a year after its last alpha test as Team 21 Studios announces the start of beta testing in April. What took so long, you ask? Well, the team has apparently rewritten the game’s entire back end code to switch it over from a Client-Authoritative to a Server-Authoritative Server architecture.

“This monumental series of tasks has taken a significant amount of effort and time, but it was a necessary change for a better, more secure MMO experience for our players,” said the developers. “Along with this, several things on the front end needed to be re-written to leverage the new system and client server relationship.”

“To put this into perspective, less than 1% of the code base from Alpha exists as it did last year. For all intents and purposes, the entire game has been re-written. Additionally, as some of you might already know from previous posts, we’ve put in a lot of work updating our graphics,” the team added.

Ilysia was Kickstarted back in 2020, promising to bring back “the glory days of MMORPGs” with inspiration from two of the most iconic titles in the genre: World of Warcraft and EverQuest. In addition to the $159,000 that Team 21 raised from the crowdfunding campaign, they also received an undisclosed amount of additional funding from a private investor, which the team assured would be used solely for the game’s development and growth.

You can catch a glimpse of what the game has to offer in the new trailer below.
