With Final Fantasy XIV officially launching on Xbox Series X|S tomorrow, Square Enix has finally clarified how they’ll be handling subscriptions on the Xbox version. According to the studio’s official statement, players will need to purchase a separate copy of the game and a separate subscription for Xbox but won’t be required to have an active Xbox Game Pass subscription to play.

You’ll also be asked to link your Xbox and Square Enix accounts the first time that you login. Once the accounts are linked, you won’t be able to unlink them or switch to another account so make sure that you’re linking the correct account, especially if you want to use existing characters from the PC and Xbox versions.

Square Enix also made it clear that Final Fantasy XIV won’t be a Game Pass title, but those with Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions will be able to download the Starter Edition for free until April 19. All service fees and microtransactions on the Xbox will also require FFXIV Coins which can be purchased from the Microsoft Store.

If you’re still determined to play the game on your Series X|S, detailed instructions on how to purchase the game, link your account, and purchase game time can be found in this FAQ. See you in Eorzea!
