Phil Spencer Still Hopes To Bring Final Fantasy XIV To Xbox After All These Years

Xbox players might still be seeing Final Fantasy XIV come out on the console more than a decade after it was first released. Xbox head Phil Spencer previously said that he’d love to see the popular MMORPG on Microsoft’s gaming console and reiterated that it’s still the goal during last week’s Tokyo Game Show.

“Naturally, we haven't given up yet,” Spencer told Japanese media site Game Watch (via VGC). “This is a commitment from both Microsoft and Square Enix to gamers and we will continue to coordinate our efforts.”

Phil Spencer first mentioned his hope of bringing “that game to Xbox” back in 2019 back when platform exclusivity was still a thing. Back then, the Xbox head said that Microsoft’s policies regarding cross-platform play were holding up the Xbox port due to restrictions put on cross-platform chat and guild creation. He’s been silent about the matter ever since, although he and FFXIV’s director and producer Naoki Yoshida have reportedly been talking about the possibility.

Now that the dividing lines between the big console manufacturers have been all but erased, there’s renewed hope that FFXIV might finally be making it to Xbox. If and when this happens, it’s a solid bet that the game’s player numbers will see another big spike as it becomes accessible to a brand new group of players.
