Book Of Travels Talks Up Combat (And Running Away) In New Dev Blog

Book of Travels might be more focused on role-playing and the unique stories that players create for themselves within Braided Shore, but it’s not necessarily going to be one of those games where you just live out your days on a secluded peaceful farm. Unless, of course, that’s your thing. While you won’t have to worry about other players giving you a beat down, you’ll eventually encounter natural predators, bandits, and supernatural beings that will force you to fight for survival. Or, you can also turn tail and run. Again, if that’s your thing.

“Just as in life there are ways to stay out of trouble! If you’re a more peaceful player and you detect a threat from afar (red name tags are an indicator) you can choose to skirt around it, and if that doesn’t work, then you’ll be able to evade it by equipping skills such as a Smoke Cylinder - a fast acting ability that grants temporary invisibility.

Your final get-out option after initiative is taken is to flee - fleeing won’t have any permanently adverse impact on your character, but it will mean that you’ll wake up somewhere completely new and for a while you’ll be slow and demoralised.”

Should you decide to stand your ground a bit of preparation is necessary before you even think about jumping into the fight. This includes equipping the necessary gear, casting knots (abilities) or drinking any teas that will help give you and edge in that particular situation.

“This is also a course of action that you’ll need to take as a preventative measure should you see a threat close by, so even if you’re not looking for a fight, it’s a good idea to keep some spells close to hand. Some opponents are aggressive and will put their hands on their swords or enter combat preparation stances.”

The actual fight is all about timing and figuring out the right time to launch an attack. “The longer you wait to strike your opponent, the more accurate your blow will be - so while your chance of hitting your target increases you will remain vulnerable to assault,” explains Might and Delight.

There’s also the chance that you’ll get knocked off balance or dizzied when you’re hit which reduces your chance of hitting back.

You can learn more about Book of Travels’ unique combat system on the game’s Kickstarter page. The video below also offers a preview of some of the dangerous monsters that you’ll come across in the game.
