Might and Delight has opened up a new test branch for Book of Travels’ next leg of beta testing. The upcoming beta test will focus primarily on addressing the tiny MMO’s memory consumption issues and will exclusively be available to players in Europe through Steam.

“In terms of functionality and content, [the test branch] isn’t any different from what you’re used to,” said the devs. “The difference from the retail version is all under the hood, and all we need is for players to populate this server branch and play it like you’d normally do – interact with NPC’s and each other, go on quests, explore the world, etc.”

To join the beta branch, navigate to Book of Travels in your Steam Library, right-click on the title, select “Properties”, click on “Betas” in the pop-up control panel, type in the code “ThereBeDragons”, and install the required updates.

Book of Travels launched into early access back in 2021, promising an entirely new experience for MMO fans. For one thing, the studio intentionally limited interaction between players to make them more “meaningful.” The team also decided to do away with the traditional RPG quest system in favor of one that encouraged players to explore and talk to every NPC they meet with the hope of picking up a quest. Combat was also deliberately made slower and required more preparation compared to other MMORPG’s where you could simply jump in and rack up combos on enemy mobs.

Unfortunately, the quirky gameplay mechanics, while undoubtedly unique, were ill-received by players who apparently found it too tedious to be fun. The game’s poor performance resulted in multiple layoffs while the remaining developers worked on redesigning the game based on feedback received from the community.

As of December 2022, the studio is reportedly back to full capacity and has actively been working on improving the game and adding new content which includes an upcoming update to the fishing system, a preview of which can be found in the new developer video below.
