Blizzard Is Now Offering Paid BattleTag Changes

Do you regret naming yourself "xX_Reaper432_Xx" the moment Overwatch came out? Maybe you've decided that you like playing as McCree more or perhaps you've just run into one too many other Reapers and it's hard to tell when someone's talking to you. In the past, you would have been stuck with that name for all eternity, wondering why you ever thought that it was a good idea, but Blizzard now offers an alternative. You can now pay the company $10 to change your BattleTag. Despite BattleTag changes being monetized now, each user still gets one free name change.
The idea isn't a new one. The one free name change followed by a $10 fee per subsequent name change model is the exact same one used by Microsoft for Xbox Live Gamertags. The problem here is that "BattleTags do not need to be unique." BattleTag changes are being monetized, but it doesn't feel as if there's an incentive to pay to get the name you want unless you have really come to hate the one you already have. After all, should Blizzard ever refresh the one free change again, you can always get the BattleTag you want then. That being said, the fact that the option exists now is certainly better than it not existing and, with any luck, the one free name change will suffice for most users—especially now that it's clear that further changes will require payment.
