Battleborn Rumored To Go Free to Play This Week

Word on the grapevine is that Battleborn is set to go free to play sometime in the next week - perhaps by the end of E3. The source of the rumor is shaky, but given the declining playerbase, the move wouldn't be all that surprising. My source is an individual within the gaming industry who wishes to remain anonymous.

Gearbox's stylistic MOBA shooter has been struggling since launch - falling from 12,000 concurrent players at launch to less than 1,000 today as seen in the graphics above. Given that the most successful MOBAs (League of Legends, DotA 2, SMITE, and Heroes of the Storm) are all free to play, transitioning to F2P may breath new into the struggling Battleborn.
We've actually discussed the possibility of Battleborn going free to play in previous podcasts.
Edit: I suspect the rumor is that they will ANNOUNCE F2P intentions soon, not actually go free to play this week.
Update: Looks like no free to play yet, but Battleborn did introduce Microtransactions. Perhaps a precursor to F2P in the future?
