The Weekly Raid: What Do You Think About Nostalrius' Shutdown

Now that Nostalrius is no more I'm curious what everyone thinks about the latest Vanilla World of Warcraft server to bite the dust. Blizzard has every legal right to send a cease and desist letter, but why have they bothered?

The situation raises quite a few questions and reveals a seeming disconnect between fans of Blizzard's MMORPG and the company itself. There's demand for Vanilla World of Warcraft, considering Nostalrius' average 8,000 players, but Blizzard finds the numbers irrelevant: "You think you do, but you don’t.”

If every private World of Warcraft server was shut down would private server players flock back to Retail?

Why won't Blizzard sanction a private server—if they don't want to run one themselves—like Daybreak did for Project1999?

Besides exercising legal rights, what benefit does Blizzard gain by shutting down Nostalrius?

Did Nostalrius pose a threat to the Retail version of World of Warcraft?

Rather than ask one concrete question this week I want to keep the discussion open ended. There's a lot to talk about here, and plenty of passions have been raised since Nostalrius' shutdown, including my own.

From Mega Man II to Ape Escape, I've been playing games for as long as I can remember. I've spent months killing porings in Ragnarok Online and more recently lived a second life in Eve Online. I usually play as gUMBY, gUMBLEoni, or gUMBLes in-game.
