Thanks to Reddit I came across an article from PC Gamer titled "How I rediscovered the magic of MMOs in private servers." The article suggests that private servers create more cohesive communities than their official counterparts. "In private servers, there's this 'us against the world' feeling that binds me together with the people I meet." It's a great piece that highlights something I've believed for a long time.

Players on private servers are more passionate than their official counterparts. After all they took the trouble to seek out a questionable installer and put their computer at risk.

While private servers are legally questionable until someone sends a letter, and then their definitely illegal, their communities are far more attractive than the official counterpart.

From Mega Man II to Ape Escape, I've been playing games for as long as I can remember. I've spent months killing porings in Ragnarok Online and more recently lived a second life in Eve Online. I usually play as gUMBY, gUMBLEoni, or gUMBLes in-game.
