World Of Warcraft Outlines Upgrade System Changes Coming In Guardians Of The Dream

When World of Warcraft: Dragonflight came out last year, it paved the way for a brand-new universal upgrade system that would streamline the entire gear upgrade process. The system itself went live as part of the expansion’s first content update and the start of Season 2. At the time, Blizzard opted to leave PvP gear alone based on the premise that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Well, the studio is now looking to “fix” PvP gears by including them in the universal upgrade system when the Guardians of the Dream update comes out next month. Once the update rolls out, players will no longer need Honor Points to upgrade their PvP gear which will be replaced with Flightstones and Crests, the same materials needed to upgrade PvE gear. You’ll be able to spend your Honor Points on other things when Season 3 begins.

“This change will only affect the PvE item levels on these pieces of gear,” Blizzard explained. “The PvP item levels are not changing, nor is the acquisition method for any kind of PvP gear.”

According to the studio, the upcoming changes will allow for a truly universal upgrade system. New players will no longer be required to learn two different upgrade systems and existing ones will no longer miss out on upgrade materials if they decide to focus on PvP since both PvP and PvE gears will use the same upgrade materials which can be obtained through both PvP and PvE content. Blizzard will also be tacking on an additional level on both the Hero and Myth upgrade tracks.

“The reason for this change is to directly address a concern players have shared around the difference between rewards from each raid tier: that there’s no significant benefit to gear earned from Heroic raid difficulty over Normal raid difficulty and their respective Mythic Keystone equivalents,” the studio said. “Two upgrade levels is a more appropriate distinction between rewards from different difficulties of content, so you can look forward to a sixth upgrade level on the Hero track and a fourth on the Myth track.”

Players will also get much-needed inventory space back in Season 3. Instead of taking up inventory space, Crests will be collected in the currency tab with a weekly limit of 90 Crests for each type. By adding a weekly cap, the team hopes to spread out gear upgrades and season rewards over a longer time.

Additionally, players will also be able to exchange low-level Crests for higher-level ones, giving them the freedom to progress their characters at their own pace without the pressure to take on more challenging instances and encounters. This should also give players who regularly take on endgame content a small incentive to help other players through less difficult content.

The above-mentioned changes are set to go live when Guardians of the Dream hits the live servers on November 7th. Blizzard goes into more detail in this dev blog.
