Cross-Faction Guilds Might Be Coming Before Dragonflight Says Ion Hazzikostas

For nearly two decades, it was virtually impossible for World of Warcraft players of different factions to group up and take on PvE content together, all in the name of keeping with Warcraft lore. With cross-faction grouping now a thing, players are now waiting on the chance to form guilds with members of the opposite faction.

That might just be happening sooner than expected as revealed by the popular MMORPG’s game director Ion Hazzikostas. “It’s something we want to do,” Hazzikostas said in an interview with Twitch streamer Maximum. “I would like us to do it before the next expansion, but it’s in the hands of a lot of engineering problem solving.”

The challenge posed by cross-faction guilds is understandable given that cross-faction grouping still has plenty of bugs, particularly when it comes to cross-faction chat. “These changes are pulling on a thread in code and systems that have been built to work a certain way for 20 years,” said Hazzikostas. He’s optimistic though that introducing cross-faction guilds may be easier than expected.

Hazzikosts said that he also has concerns about allowing cross-faction chat entirely. “The thing we want to make sure of is that there’s some opt-in connection, you’re not just getting a whisper from a random cross-faction person that ganked you,” he explained. That’s definitely good news for purists and RP’ers who want keep the fires of war burning between the two rival factions.
