Nearly 10 years ago, EA made decided to try to bring The Sims franchise to the MMO world with The Sims Online which was later rebranded as EA-Land in 2008. Unfortunately, the game failed to meet both the MMO community and EA’s expectations and was subsequently shut down just four months after the name change.

EA, however, still hasn’t given up on the idea of a massively multiplayer version of the popular life simulation game and has been dropping hints that The Sims 5 will be another multiplayer game. That game is apparently in the verly early stages of development with the codename The Sims: Project Rene and is being touted as a “next generation The Sims game and creative platform.”

“The title Project Rene was chosen to be reminiscent of words like renewal, renaissance and rebirth to represent the developer’s renewed commitment for The Sims’ bright future,” EA revealed during yesterday’s The Sims Summit. “The game will stay true to what The Sims has always been while pushing to evolve how those Sims think and behave. It will reimagine The Sims with even more ways to play, tools to encourage creativity, and the ability to tell meaningful stories. With Project Rene, players will have the choice to play solo or collaborate with others, and will have the ability to play their game across supported devices.”

Details about Project Rene are scarce at the moment, although EA has big news for fans of the franchise. The Sims 4 base game is now free to download and play forever on PC via Origin and the EA App and on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

“With The Sims 4 base game launching for free, now is the perfect time for new players to experience the magic of The Sims and discover new ways to play, tell stories, and build your dream creations,” EA said.
