Tencent might insist that Tarisland isn’t a World of Warcraft-clone, but taking a lot of pages from the popular fantasy MMORPG’s playbook, right down to how its bow-user class looks and plays. The studio gave fans their first look at the upcoming MMORPG’s Ranger class along with information on its abilities and playstyles.

“Listening to the howling wind and feeling the cascading rain, I enjoy all that nature has to offer. My arrows split the air and pierce steel like it's paper. My traps are intricately designed to bring the behemoths into submission. Intelligence, focus, and composure are what I survive on this wild wasteland with.”

Rangers are not only equipped with a variety of hard-hitting long-range skills, they can also place traps and summon various creatures to their aid. They can choose from two unique specializations – Tamed Beast and Hunting – each offering a different set of abilities and playstyles.

“Rangers with the Tamed Beast specialization have ability to communicate with beasts and and assist them in their battles,” said Tencent. “They are also skilled in making and using traps, which can be used not only for hunting in the wilderness, but also for effectively deterring enemy attacks, disrupting their pace, and helping teammates gain the upper hand in battle.”

Those who specialize in Hunting, on the other hand, are encouraged to stand their ground to gain Stability points that will gradually increase their damage and grant them buffs the longer they stand still. “With high Stability, the preparation time of Sniper Shot is reduced, and RapidFire can deal bonus DMG,” the studio explained. “The veteran Rangers with Hunting specialization seek out the best positions on the battleground, using their stability to counteract changes and delivering fatal blows to their foes.”

It's basically a slightly different take on the typical archer/hunter class found in most MMORPGs, although Tencent does note that the Ranger is still a work-in-progress and may change as development progresses on Tarisland.

On the subject of development progress, the next closed beta test is still on track for November which will likely include the Ranger class as well as the long list of PvE improvements that the team has made over the past few months. You can check out the full preview blog here.
