Cloud Imperium’s Squadron 42 Is ‘Feature-Complete’ And Now In Its Polishing Phase

This weekend’s CitizenCon 2023 was apparently one of the biggest fan events that Cloud Imperium Games had ever hosted. The two-day event was chock-full of teases and demos for a whole host of new features and content coming to Star Citizen in the near future, including visual improvements, engineering gameplay, a new test server, and a plethora of new ships.
It wasn’t all about Star Citizen though, as Squadron 42 also took center stage with the announcement that the standalone single-player game is now feature-complete. “As we move into the polishing phase, we're fully focused on optimizing and fine-tuning all aspects of the gameplay experience to deliver an unprecedented cinematic adventure,” Cloud Imperium said.
“Ultimately, this is the final phase of gameplay iteration before we fully transition into optimization and stability on the road to release,” added the game’s senior director, Richard Tyrer. “We have come this far, and we want to make sure that Squadron 42 delivers on the promise of being this generation's Wing Commander.”
The announcement was accompanied by a 26-minute video that showcases various gameplay elements, tactical space combat, on-foot exploration, and cutscenes from Squadron 42. The cutscenes feature a cast of notable sci-fi actors including Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, John Rys-Davies, Gary Oldman, and Liam Cunningham who’ve lent their voices and likeness to various characters in the single-player campaign.
Cloud Imperium didn’t offer a timeline as to how long the game will remain in “polishing phase.” Considering how long it took for the game to reach this stage in its development, it’s probably going to take a couple of years. Hopefully, it won’t take another decade. Fingers crossed y’all.
