Early Access Dino Shooter Second Extinction Is Shutting Down Next Year

Co-op dino shooter Second Extinction will no longer be making it out of early access and will be shutting down sometime next year.

The multiplayer title launched into early access back in October 2020 to a very disappointing turn out, peaking at just over 2,000 concurrent players on launch day. Since then, those numbers have dropped considerably to an average peak concurrency of just 20 players over the past three months. Even the Epic Games Store giveaway in December 2021 did nothing to bolster the game’s playerbase.

The game was also supposed to transition into full release sometime in 2022, but unforeseen issues forced the studio to put the brakes on it indefinitely, driving more players away.

As such, developer Systemic Reaction has made the decision to call it quits and pull the plug on what looks to be a pretty decent game. “After thoughtful consideration and exploration of our best course of action, we have made the difficult decision to end active development of Second Extinction,” the studio announced. “While Second Extinction is well-loved among our players and the gaming community, it regrettably did not achieve the success we hoped it would.”

Systemic Reaction has already stopped selling the game and will be permanently shutting down the servers sometime in 2024.

Second Extinction isn’t the first shooter to be shut down before it even leaves early access. Just this year alone, we’ve seen several promising titles bite the dust due to lack of interest, and more importantly lack of players. These include Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt, Super People, Hyenas, and more recently, The Cycle: Frontier.
