Jagex Reveals Changes Coming To RuneScape’s Controversial Hero Pass System

Late last month, Jagex decided to go ahead and release a new monetized battle pass track for RuneScape despite massive pushback from the fantasy MMORPG’s community. The studio later said that it was willing to make changes to the so-called Hero Pass but insisted that they had no plans to remove it regardless of the community feels.
The studio promptly started making interim changes to the Hero Pass, starting with the removal of content buffs and the introduction of lootbox keys and prismatic lamps to the daily mission reward pool. Additionally, the team also plans to reintroduce daily challenges sometime in October.
Jagex also plans to start gathering player feedback on the Hero Pass changes starting on October 2nd via player surveys and a player panel that the studio will be made up of selected content creators and community leaders from Reddit and Discord. The team will also be releasing developer blogs to talk about upcoming changes to the Hero Pass system prior to their release, the first of which focuses on reducing the time it takes to progress through battle pass levels.
“We're setting out on a journey to make Hero Pass a better experience - one that is better aligned to the intents that we laid out in our initial announcement and your own desires for what the system should be,” the studio said. “To do this, we're going to approach these improvements with an openness to re-evaluating many parts of the design, while taking the time to have a fully-fledged approach that brings player feedback into the heart of our efforts.”
Meanwhile, players are still calling for the removal of the Hero Pass while others claim that the changes are just Jagex’s way of buying time until the uproar dies down. It looks like that’s going to take a while though, if it dies down at all.
We're on a mission to make Hero Pass a better experience - and your feedback will guide us every step of the way.
Here's our plans for a new Community Consultation process over the weeks ahead.
