RuneScape Faces Subscriber Backlash Over Its New Battle Pass System

Jagex is enticing RuneScape players to throw more money into the game on top of the existing subscription option with a new battle pass-style system called the Hero Pass. As with most battle passes, the Hero Pass will offer both free and paid tracks with daily objectives and one-off challenges that players can complete to unlock rewards.
“Hero Pass is a brand new part of the core RuneScape experience, designed to make the game even more rewarding whenever - and however - you choose to play,” the studio announced. “Hero Pass builds on lessons of the past to bring a new integrated gameplay experience that fits into your regular play, with more unique cosmetic rewards and earnable buffs that add flavor to the gameplay.”
Unsurprisingly, the studio’s decision to introduce a battle pass system is proving to be extremely unpopular with the classic MMORPG’s community, especially after last year’s subscription price increase. We do note that the Hero Pass paid track is completely optional if you don’t mind dealing with a bit of FOMO.
The Hero Pass system arrives on September 4th. You can find out more about it in the new developer video below.
