Nostalrius Releases Some Results From Their Community Survey

This past weekend the Nostalrius team released some data from their post-mortem community survey, one which I participated in along with 50,000 other respondents. The 9 page PDF provides some interesting information:

  • Nostarlius had ~6,000 players online at any given time, with players from around the world.
  • The average age was between 19 and 25, suggesting that some players did not play Vanilla in its prime.
  • Most players were also veterans of the game, having played for more than 8 years on the official servers.
  • Respondents felt expansions prior to Cataclysm offered the better experience.

My favorite finding:

"Data from the survey shows that players are actually willing to play on legacy realms for more than a year in 70% of the cases...

...An analysis of active accounts shows that after 7 months, 30% of the created accounts are still active, which is huge for an entirely free to play server."

It's important to note that of the 50,000 participants only 30,000 responses were included in the final analysis due to inconsistencies in their answers, such as proclaiming to have played World of Warcraft longer than it's existed.

One statistic that was left out, and I'm looking forward to seeing, is just how many players would pay a subscription to play on a legacy server. Hopefully, the data is released in a follow-up report.
