Lord Of The Rings Online Says They’re Working To Address Lag Issues

While it’s great that players have begun flocking to Lord of the Rings Online following it’s big 15th anniversary update, the sudden influx of players has put additional strain on servers that are already in dire need of improvements.
“With Update 33, we saw a huge influx of players, the likes of which we haven’t seen in at least six years,” said LOTRO Producer Oleg Brodskiy. “This has led to worsening performance across all worlds. We even thought we’d lost a Landroval blade — someone’s gonna use this to try and argue we are or aren’t virtualizing, we still are, but VMs still gotta live somewhere — but it went down temporarily and was successfully revived.”
Brodskiy acknowledged the issue on the official forums saying that they’ve already made improvements to the game’s performance and are continually working to address it. “Lag continues to be a problem, and we continue to work on it,” he said. “Overall, performance is in a better place than when Gundabad released, despite larger player concurrencies and overall player population. ‘Better’ doesn’t mean good, but it’s nice to see that the months we spent working on various improvements over the past six months have borne some fruit.”
He revealed that they’ve got several initiatives in the pipeline, including 64-bit servers, retiring the 32-bit client, and building better tools to quickly identify and fix problems. The 64-bit servers, in particular, have been the focus of the team’s efforts since it requires a lot of digging and reworking code, but Brodskiy reported that they’re making progress and that the updated servers should be coming soon.
