The immensely popular Dungeons & Dragons franchise is reportedly about to change hands as insider sources reveal that Hasbro is planning to sell the IP with Tencent currently on top of the buyers list.

According to Chinese press site Speed Daily, the Chinese media giant’s interactive entertainment division is currently negotiating with Hasbro to acquire rights to D&D and its video game adaptations, with Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios as the intermediary.

The D&D rights were apparently first offered to Larian Studios. Lacking the funding to close the deal, they passed it on to Tencent who apparently owns 30% of the studio. By selling the IP, Hasbro might just be able to recover its growing losses from poor toy sales which had grown to over $500 million from Q4 2022 to Q3 2023, even with the D&D franchise pulling most of the company’s weight.

The impact of the potential deal on D&D video games and MMOs, including Dungeons and Dragons Online and Neverwinter, is still unclear, but we’ll be keeping a close eye from the sidelines.
