Funcom Raises $10 Million In Funding, Secures Rights to 29 New IPs

Veteran MMORPG studio Funcom has had a busy year. Their latest game, Conan Exiles, has been well received with over 600,000 copies sold so far in Early Access. A free to play reboot of The Secret World, titled Secret World Legends has also done well. Now Funcom is capping off a productive year with a new partnership.

Funcom and Cabinet Group LLC have formed a jointly owned venture called Heroic Signatures that will manage the interactive (read: gaming) rights to 29 different RPG IPs. These IPs including the writings of Robert E Howard, and various Swedish original pen & paper and board games. These properties include Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane, Mutant Chronicles, Dark Agnes, Kult, Kull of Atlantis, Mutant: Year Zero, and El Borak.

Its important to note that Funcom will not be the only studio making games for these IPs, instead Funcom will be managing this portfolio and licensing out the IPs to other game developers. One as of yet unannounced project is already under development by a third party, with Funcom serving as publisher. Funcom CEO Rui Casais shared his vision for the project:

“Heroic Signatures is now the guardian and caretaker of a veritable treasure chest of incredible worlds, each of them ready to be brought into the interactive space. Any developer or publisher will be able to license these properties, and our ambition is to see a multitude of games grow from these worlds and to see the properties strengthened across the board to the benefit of everyone who works with them.”

To fund this new initiative, Funcom has secured $10.6 million USD from SwedBank. To learn more about Heroic Signatures and the IPs it represents, check out the official press release and the new Heroic Sigantures site below!
