Who had their money on Fntastic shutting down less than a week after The Day Before’s early access launch? The Singapore-based studio has announced its closure after the zombie survival MMO flopped big time right out of the gate due to its extremely unpolished state and its lack of content.

According to the studio’s official statement, The Day Before “failed financially” and they now lack the funds to continue its development, or keep the lights on for that matter. A leaked memo also reveals that over 50% of those who purchased the game requested refunds and that the studio could no longer afford to keep the servers running. What little revenue the game generated is now being used to pay off debts to their partners.

“We invested all our efforts, resources, and man-hours into the development of The Day Before, which was our first huge game,” Fntastic said in its official statement. “We really wanted to release new patches to reveal the full potential of the game, but unfortunately, we don’t have the funding to continue the work.”

“It’s important to note that we didn’t take any money from the public during the development of The Day Before,” the studio continued. “There were no pre-orders or crowdfunding campaigns. We worked tirelessly for five years, pouring our blood, sweat, and tears into the game. We apologize if we didn’t meet your expectations. We did everything within our power, but unfortunately, we miscalculated our capabilities. Creating games is an incredibly challenging endeavor.”

The Day Before is no longer purchasable on Steam but the servers will remain operational indefinitely. Whether its publisher Mytona will pick up the game to develop it themselves remains to be seen.
