James Cameron’s epic sci-fi film Avatar is getting a video game adaptation courtesy of Disney and Tencent, titled Avatar: Reckoning. Before you get too excited though, it’s not going to be the big PC open-world MMORPG that most of you have probably been wishing for since the movie came out. Instead, it’s going to a mobile-exclusive multiplayer shooter and will be developed by Dragon Raja’s Archosaur Games and will be published globally by Tencent’s new publishing arm Level Infinite.
“Avatar: Reckoning is set to debut on iOS and Android mobile devices in 2022. Avatar: Reckoning will transport players to never-before-seen parts of Pandora where they will meet new Na’vi clans fighting to defend their home, battle powerful RDA troops seeking to exploit the resources of the moon, and encounter spectacular alien creatures – all playable solo or in dynamic multiplayer matches.”
Players will assume the role of Avatars, just like in the movie, which they’ll get to level up as they complete single-player story missions and join co-op and PvP game modes. The game runs on Unreal Engine 4 with controls and combat designed specifically for mobile devices.
While the official site is now live, it’s still pretty bare and Information is still scarce at the moment. When the game will launch or if there’ll be alpha or beta tests this year remains to be seen. We’ll keep an eye out for this one.
Meanwhile, a single-player open-world adventure from Ubisoft Massive, titled Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and the sequel to the original film will both be coming out later this year. So all-in-all it looks like 2022 is going to be a pretty big year for Avatar fans the world over.
