Avatar Reckoning Released New Gameplay Footage At Disney’s D23 Expo

For a film that’s held on to the title of Highest Grossing Film of All-Time, Avatar strangely hasn’t had a lot of video game adaptations. Since the movie’s premiere in 2009, there have only been two Avatar games that have been released with two more in development, one of which is a new mobile MMORPG shooter from Disney and Tencent called Avatar Reckoning.
The iconic company’s D23 Expo this past weekend saw the release of a new gameplay trailer for Avatar Reckoning along with an Android and iOS release window of “soon”. It’s more than likely that the game’s launch will coincide with the new Avatar film Avatar: The Way of the Water’s opening in US theaters on December 16th. Note that the upcoming mobile game is different from Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora open-world game that recently saw its release date pushed back to 2023 or 2024.
Avatar: The Way of the Water is a direct sequel to award-winning 2009 film and follows the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and the rest of the blue tree-loving alien elves ten years after the events of the original film. The Way of the Water was first scheduled for release in 2014 but was delayed to incorporate new technology for use in three more Avatar films, with the final installment in the franchise slated for release in 2028.
