Battleborn's first Story Operation DLC launches today, along with a new multiplayer mode, Halloween-themed skins, and fixes as part of today's patch. But can the update save Battleborn?

Join Attikus as he relives the third Thrall uprising that sparked a revolution within the Jennerit Empire. Play solo as any Battleborn hero or co-op with up to two buddies as you fight your way through the streets and rooftops of the Tempest slums in “Attikus and the Thrall Rebellion.”

You'll need to own the Season Pass or have purchased the Digital Deluxe edition to participate in the Story Operation. Or you can purchase it for 700 Platinum.

The new competitive mode is Free; it's called Face-Off and sends players into a 15 minute 5v5 match where, instead of versing each other, players defeat NPC Varelsi, collect fallen masks, and turn the masks in for points.

And of course—tis the season—Battleborn has some ghoulish skins available on the marketplace.

There are plans for another PvP mode in the future, two new heroes, the remaining 4 story missions, more skins, and more taunts. It all seems too little too late.

I like Battleborn, still do, even though it had a teenager identity crisis and couldn't figure out what kind of game it wanted to be. It's biggest issue was its release: a buy-to-play game in the shadow of Overwatch and the free-to-play alternative Paladins.

Looking at it now, Battleborn was a sacrifice to the hero-shooter gods that let the others thrive, releasing at the wrong time with the wrong business model. Just how long can it continue hobbling along?
