The World War 2 Online dev team is looking to give the 23-year-old MMO first-person shooter a major visual makeover by upgrading it to Unreal Engine 5. The process, however, will require additional funds which the studio hopes to raise through a $32,000 Indiegogo campaign.

The upgrade, dubbed WWII Online 2.0, promises significantly improved visuals with more modern vehicle artwork, enhanced infantry animation, and the removal of any technical debt on the backend side of the game. Players can also look forward to three new tanks and three new anti-aircraft guns in both the old version and version 2.0 which seems to confirm that it will be an entirely separate game.

“This is important because the work we do now to increase our visual appeal while removing known issues will optimize your experience today and downstream,” said developer Cornered Rat Software. “We are a small group of game developers who are focused on the betterment of WWII Online. Your funds are not going to any outside source or for any other purpose.”

Long-time players will likely be familiar with these Indiegogo campaigns as the studio launches one every year to help fund the game’s continued development. Surprisingly, the UE5 funding campaign, its eleventh so far, is asking for less funds than the usual crowdfunding campaigns and might be worth sinking a few dollars into if you’re into WWII shooters.
