Warhammer: Vermintide 2 developer Fatshark first revealed its plans to add a Versus Mode to the co-op action game back in 2019. That would be the last time that the studio mentioned the game mode, until last year when it confirmed that it was still in development and announced the start of closed alpha testing.

Versus Mode pits two four-player teams against each other in multi-section maps based on existing Adventure Mode maps. One team plays as Heroes while the other team play as Pactsworn. The goal of the Hero team is to earn as many points as they can by completing various objectives as they move to the next section of the map and the Pactsworn tries to kill or disable them. The teams switch sides once a section is complete or all Heroes have been incapacitated. The team with the most points at the end of the match is declared the winner, with matches typically lasting around 20-30 minutes.

A recent dev blog now reveals that closed alpha testing has come to an end and open alpha is now in full swing. The latest build replaces the Screaming Bell map with Righteous Stand and tweaks both factions to give the Pactsworn a fighting change since they were apparently dominated by the Heroes during the closed alpha. The underdogs are now doing quite well for themselves as revealed on Reddit.

The ongoing alpha test will run until March 18 and is available directly from the Warhammer: Vermintide 2 client instead of the standalone launcher used during the closed alpha tests. The game is currently on sale at 80% off on Steam if you’re interested in taking the Versus Mode for a quick spin.
