Ubisoft Touts New Cloud Computing Platform As The Solution To PC Hardware Limitations

Ubisoft has unveiled an innovative new cloud computing platform called Ubisoft Scalar that could effectively remove the limitations imposed by traditional PC hardware. The new platform is designed to work alongside and enhance existing game engines and allow for real-time updates without service interruption allowing developers to create bigger, better, and more complex games.
Ubisoft Scalar was announced by the Ubisoft Stockholm team via a Q&A-style post earlier today. The tool is touted as the solution to hardware limitations and will facilitate the development of a “broader spectrum of games in the coming years.” The team also maintained that the platform is designed to enhance and improve the quality of games and not distribute them, unlike GeForce NOW and other game streaming services.
“Ubisoft Scalar is a new foundational technology that enables Ubisoft titles to utilize the power of the cloud to ensure that developers aren’t limited by time or hardware, but by their imaginations. The result could enable game worlds that are bigger, more social, and richer than anything that’s ever been seen before at Ubisoft.”
“Scalar is an alternative and also an option for existing game engines to use to be cloud accelerable, both in terms of production but also in real-time experiences,” said the team. This means that Ubisoft can use it in tandem with their Snowdrop Engine or even Epic Games’ popular Unreal Engine to enhance their upcoming games.
In fact, Ubisoft Stockholm revealed that they’re currently working on a new unannounced IP using Scalar. The tool is also decentralized for use across Ubisoft’s other studios so there’s a good chance that we’ll see the technology incorporated into other upcoming games from the French publisher.
Fortunately, Scalar doesn’t seem have any connection to the company’s failed attempt to enter the NFT market, a.k.a. Ubisoft Quartz.
