Twitch Streamer Launches Crowdfunding Campaign For Survival MMO ‘The Other World’
Twitch streamer Demone Kim has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds towards developing an ambitious new open-world multiplayer survival action RPG called The Other World. As with most crowdfunding drives, Kim is promising a game with a massive feature set in exchange for a massive amount of money, $500,000 to be exact.
That feature set includes a dynamic game world that changes based on the seasons and player actions which will not only influence the physical environment but also the political landscape and lore. There will be no over-arching narrative or seasonal story arcs though. Instead, players will have the freedom to create their own stories, forge their own paths, and learn about topics that are most important to them.
Interactions with NPCs and the game world will also affect how the game world evolves. Avoiding conflict with an orc village, for example, could result in the village turning into a massive fortress in the future.
As far as its survival mechanics go, players will have to manage health, hunger, thirst, and stamina while also dealing with negative status effects due to poison, injuries, and environmental conditions. Progression will be skill-based as players gain proficiency through the repeated use of weapons, gathering materials, crafting, and building.
The Other World will also feature a modular building system that will allow players to work together and even use NPCs to create towering structures and sprawling settlements.
It’s worth noting that the GoFundMe campaign has no set end date and that full refunds will be given should development be forced to stop due to a catastrophe befalling the studio, such as a meteor hitting the Earth. Kim also promises that the funds will immediately be used for game development and that they’ll be regularly updating the community on the progress of the game.
How they plan to issue full refunds once they’ve started using the money is beyond me. Unless, of course, Kim is willing to take it out of his own pockets should it come to that.
