Star Citizen Hits Over $500M In Total Funding Over The Past Decade

Chris Roberts’ still-in-alpha space sandbox MMO Star Citizen has now amassed over $500 million in funding nearly a decade after it was first Kickstarted for $2 million. In November 2021, Roberts Space Industries, the game’s developer, reported that they’ve raked in a total funding of $400 million which means that the studio managed to raise over $100 million in a span of just ten months.
The statistics shown by Roberts Space Industries on the official site suggest that the main revenue generators for Star Citizen are ship sales related to various in-game events such as its virtual ship expos, last week’s Ship Showdown campaign, and the just-released Pirate Week event.
The community, however, has had mixed reactions to the news. Some have offered RSI their congratulations for achieving the milestone while others drew attention to the extremely slow development process considering how much money the studio has managed to milk out of the game’s playerbase.
Star Citizen was Kickstarted back in 2012 and was initially planned for release in 2014. Ten years later and the game is now the highest crowdfunded video game in history yet it’s still stuck in alpha limbo with incomplete game systems and still no beta release in sight. RSI is also developing single player title set in the same universe called Squadron 42 which has also seen multiple delays.
