Independence Day Director Announces New NFT MMORPG Called Space Nation
Renowned blockbuster director Roland Emmerich, famous for his earth-shattering films like Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, is venturing into new territory despite the disappointing reception of his latest film, Moonfall.
According to Deadline, Emmerich has joined forces with veterans from World of Warcraft and Warframe to create a groundbreaking multimedia IP called Space Nation. At the heart of this venture is an MMORPG that has been in development for three years and is set to begin alpha testing this summer, followed by closed beta in January, with the ultimate goal of an open beta launch in 2024.
What the Deadline article doesn’t mention is that the game is that the game will feature blockchain mechanics and NFTs, as revealed in the announcement press release and whitepaper. As with most blockchain MMO’s, Space Nation apparently hopes to cater to players that want to earn from it and those who just want to have fun.
“Drawing from valuable lessons learned from the history of Web3 gaming, coupled with our two decades of experience in traditional MMORPGs, we firmly believe that blending the elements of entertainment and economic incentives is the optimal direction for the future of Web3 gaming,” said Space Nation co-creator and former World of Warcraft product manager Jerome Wu.
“Throughout the meticulous three-year development of the game, our unwavering focus has been on creating immersive gameplay and placing fun-first as our guiding principle, while leveraging Web3 technology and tools to enrich the player journey,” he added.
As for the game itself, it promises a “grand space opera” that will take players on an epic through the Telikos Cluster as they unravel its mysteries. The galaxy cluster is home to three different factions. Whether they’re friendly or hostile to each other though is anyone’s guess.
Emmerich says that the MMO is just the first step in building an expansive universe, with a TV series, anime, and more video games to follow. The project has raked in roughly $50 million in funding with additional funds expected to flow in this fall.
