We never thought this day would arrive but Ubisoft is apparently making progress on their long-awaited pirate-themed MMO, Skull and Bones. The team is now accepting applications for private testers through the game’s Insider Program.

“The Insider Program is on-going live testing initiative for which we're inviting carefully selected players to play an early version of our game in real conditions before anyone else. Meaning for the very first time, members of our Insider Program get to play Skull and Bones and get a sneak peek at the work our development team has been doing behind the scenes.”

Ubisoft says that they’re keeping the testing group relatively small to allow them to fully understand and absorb every piece of feedback they receive and be able to share information straight from the development team. Testers will also be bound by a Non-Disclosure Agreement but will be able to discuss information among themselves.

Skull and Bones was first announced at E3 2017 and has been in development limbo ever since. The upcoming open-world pirate MMO has been delayed four times in as many years and was rebooted as a live service game in 2020. The new vision for the game includes more MMO elements, a persistent game world, dynamic storylines, and characters that will evolve over time based on the collective actions of the community.

Ubisoft is eyeing a 2023 release for the game but considering its development history it’s probably best to not get your hopes up. You can find out more about the Insider Program on the Skull and Bones official site.
