Shot Online Celebrates 20 Years With a Massive Birdie Race

Shot Online, one of the longest-running golf MMOs on PC, is turning 20 this month. To mark the milestone, publisher Webzen is rolling out a community-wide Birdie Race and a slate of in-game events designed to reward both newcomers and veteran club wielders.
Originally released in 2004 in South Korea and later localized worldwide, Shot Online mixes traditional MMO progression with the mechanics of a golf sim. Its staying power has come from regular content updates, seasonal tournaments, and a dedicated player economy built around gear crafting and club upgrades. The twentieth-anniversary update leans into that heritage by tying rewards to collective performance rather than individual grind.
Main anniversary highlights:
- The Birdie Race tracks every birdie scored by the community. Each global milestone unlocks one of eight reward tiers, ranging from experience boosts on “Happy Courses” to a 400 percent NG (in-game currency) bonus at the final stage.
- A limited 20th Anniversary Costume set drops throughout the event period.
- Daily login and playtime bonuses hand out 20th Anniversary Gift Boxes, item upgrade materials, and extra EXP scrolls.
- Players can craft gear using a new Essence of Golf material earned during the celebration.
- Rare Golden Tickets return, redeemable for some of the MMO’s hardest-to-find clubs and apparel.
Not many PC sports MMOs reach the two-decade mark, especially in a niche space like online golf. The only other 'golf MMO' that comes to mind is Pangya, which also launched in 2004 by Korean developer Ntreev, but that one didn't last nearly as long. Private severs seem to exist for it though, so it can still be played today.
This update is as much a thank-you tour for long-time players as it is an attempt to showcase the game’s social side to newer audiences. Full details and the event calendar are available on the official site: Shot Online 20th Anniversary Event Page.
