Several promising new MMO and multiplayer games recently popped up on our radar thanks to the ongoing indie-focused Steam Next Fest event. One of those games is Serum, a co-op post-apocalyptic first-person survival game that might just give Rust a run for its money.

The game plays like Sons of the Forest and looks like BioShock, with a bit of Fallout thrown into the mix. You’ll wake up in a sewer system after a cataclysmic event called the Blight with a timer implanted in your arm that shows how long you have to live. The timer can be extended by injecting yourself with various serums that you’ll find out in the post-apocalyptic world or ones that you’ve brewed by yourself.

Along the way, you’ll need to gather resources that you’ll need to craft tools and weapons and build traps and shelters to survive the blight-ravaged world and the mutated creatures that now inhabit it. You’ll also need to keep yourself dosed with serums to stay alive. Serums also provide different status effects that you can use to your advantage.

“The toxic fog obscures the dangers in an apocalyptic world where every second counts. A relentless timer on your arm decides between life and death. Prove your courage, explore the mysterious environment for resources and brew serums for unique abilities. Every dose of serum can make the difference in the fight for survival against mutated enemies. Find shelter in the chaos, search for technology and modify weapons for greater effectiveness. The race against time begins now.”

Serum also features an actual storyline and Unreal Engine 5-powered graphics that bring the hostile world and its many dangers to life. “Unravel the mystery of Serum and survive the fight against time amidst a ruined world of destruction and mutated creatures,” reads the game’s description on Steam.

The game is expected to launch into Steam Early Access in the second quarter of this year, with a free demo available on Steam until tomorrow. It will be buy-to-play on launch, so jump in now while it’s still free.
