After taking a long break for the holidays, the Sea of Thieves team is back with a development roadmap for 2022. As with previous years, major content drops will be done every season but will now be supplemented by the new Adventures and Mysteries system which will be making its debut on February 17th featuring the first Adventure – Shrouded Islands.

“Enter Adventures and Mysteries: these story-focused events are designed to complement Seasons, providing regular narrative-driven content for players to dig into alongside the other gameplay features brought in by our Seasonal content drops. Adventures are time-limited, arriving on a roughly monthly schedule and running for 2-3 weeks, with each one forming a chapter within an overarching narrative. Accompanying cinematics will help set up the story, and a finale Adventure will cap off each narrative arc.

Mysteries will run alongside Adventures and remain part of the world for longer, relying on the community to solve clues and riddles both inside and outside the game to move the story forward. These will play their own part in making the world of Sea of Thieves feel richer than ever before, and while the subjects of these Mysteries could be anything, we can tell you that the first one will see players attempting to solve a murder.”

“With Seasonal updates still forming the skeleton for Sea of Thieves, one of our main goals for 2022 is to flesh out our pirate world and make it feel more dynamic,” said Rare. “Stories, whether they’re the ones we tell or those that our players create themselves, are at the very heart of Sea of Thieves, so we want to inspire new tales of derring-do and comradery.”

New features and even more content will be coming to the pirate-themed MMORPG when Season 6 kicks off in March. These include the addition of Sea Forts for players, new Advenures and Mysteries, a new Plunder Pass, and more.

Meanwhile, the studio has permanently removed The Arena PvP mode after it failed to gain traction with the community.

“Only 2% of our players’ time is spent in The Arena on a consistent basis, and this has never really changed,” the team explained. “We recognise that some criticism we might receive here is that we didn’t invest enough in The Arena to give it the best chance of success alongside the continued growth of Adventure. The reality is that as a new platform, The Arena regretfully never became popular enough to justify focusing our creative efforts there, beyond our initial efforts to refine the experience to appeal to a broader audience.”
