Overwatch Team Renaming McCree

The Overwatch team announced today that Jesse McCree's name will be changed in the near future. This move comes after the company faces backlash from players after the sexual harassment allegations within the company with Jesse McCree's name being derived from a developer at Blizzard who was allegedly involved in such activity.

Official Statement:

The vast majority of players were likely unaware that McCree was named after a potentially problematic developer, so this statement seems to be aimed at the media as a form of virtue signaling.

Lore-wise, the name change should be an easy sell to players. McCree is an outlaw after all and using a fake name is part of that lifestyle.

A narrative arc for September was planned with McCree playing a key part, but that has since been delayed to later this year. In the meantime a new FFA map will be released in September instead.
