Obol Squad Takes Center Stage in Zenless Zone Zero’s Next Update on Sept 4

Zenless Zone Zero, HoYoverse’s urban-fantasy action RPG that spins roguelike combat into a neon-lit dystopia, is gearing up for its Version 2.2 patch on September 4. Dubbed “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,” the update introduces the Defense Force’s Obol Squad and pushes the story deeper into the political knots surrounding New Eridu’s Waifei Peninsula.
For players who came in with Version 2.0’s Exaltist arc, this patch picks up the fallout of that conflict. Two new S-Rank agents, Seed and Orphie & Magus, join the roster alongside a fresh Bangboo support unit.
Main additions in Version 2.2
- Obol Squad debut: Seed (Electric Attack) wields a custom mecha for sustained damage, while Orphie & Magus (Fire Attack) specialize in laser-based team buffs that pierce enemy defenses.
- New Bangboo: Mercury, an S-Rank support unit that rolls into battle inside a tank.
- Returning characters: Trigger (Electric Stun) and Evelyn (Fire Attack) cycle back into the banner rotation.
- Band of Brave Bangboo: A tower-defense event featuring new terrain hazards. Clearing stages unlocks the A-Rank Excaliboo companion.
- Rhythm Rave: A timing mini-game built around the game’s soundtrack for extra rewards.
- Quality-of-life tweaks: Players can now pick Belle or Wise before starting companion events, alongside several smaller interface improvements.
Zenless Zone Zero is available on PC, PlayStation 5, iOS, and Android. While the game is clearly designed for mobile, the dedicated PC and console clients make it look and feel like it was designed for those platforms. As with previous HoYoverse titles, the production value here is top notch.
