NetEase To Shut Down VR Multiplayer RPG Nostos Less Than Two Years After Launch
NetEase has just announced their plans to shut down Nostos less than two years after the game launched on Steam. “Due to changes in business development, the operation of Nostos will be terminated at 22:00, June 16, 2021 (PST),” read the announcement on Facebook. The game has been pulled from Steam and refunds will be given to players who bought a copy after 4pm PST on November 30, 2020.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the termination of Nostos’ operation and ask for your understanding that we share your feelings about the upcoming parting of Nostos,” said the Nostos team. “[. . .] Once again we’d like to thank you for your continued support of Nostos and hope you can support other outstanding NetEase products!”
Nostos is a SpatialOS-powered online multiplayer VR RPG that was first unveiled during Gamescom 2018. The game features anime-style cel-shaded graphics and a massive open-world that can be explored by up to four-players. The game officially launched on Steam on December 7, 2019.
NetEase invested $50 million on Improbable’s SpatialOS in July 2018 with plans to use the cloud development platform on multiple games including Nostos.
