NCSoft Reports Q2, 2021 Earnings - Mobile Games Continue to Dominate

South Korean gaming giant NCSoft reported its Q2, 2021 earnings today and the financial highlights were as follows:

  • Quarterly Revenue: 538,542 Million Korean Won (approx. $465M USD) vs 538,567M KRW in Q2 2020 (flat year over year)
  • Quarterly Operating Profit: 112,769 Million KRW (approx. $97M USD) vs 208,984M KRW in Q2 2020 (down 46% year over year)

Perhaps more interestingly though is NCSoft's revenue breakdown by game. Lineage M and Lineage 2M combined made 352,143M KRW vs 105,968M KRW for all of NCSoft's PC games combined. Either of NCSoft's 2 major mobile games individually out-sold every PC game combined.

Clearly NCSoft hasn't abandoned PC gaming all together though as a new expansion for Guild Wars 2 is in the works and a new solo-friendly server for Lineage 2: Aden is launching in the West soon. Interestingly though, NCSoft refers to their PC franchises as "legacy", so its clear where NCSoft's priorities are.

The vast majority of NCSoft's revenues are from South Korea followed by Taiwan, Japan, and China. North America and Europe combined add up to $21M USD (less than 5% of company wide revenues)

Note: 'Royalty' primarily refer to revenues earned in China as NCSoft does not operate their games directly in the region.
