Movie Theaters to Become eSports Arenas

Super League Gaming wants to bring recreational video game leagues to  movie theaters every week. Imagine sitting in a plush AMC chair with your friends and a laptop, shouting at an over-sized screen, "Why didn't you ward!?" You're no longer restricted to Twitch chatrooms and low-brow YouTube comments, but will share the experience of playing games with friends and strangers. Attendees will be able to compete against each other for glory and the right to gloat, with nowhere to run but the door marked "Exit." I can already envision intense Smash tournaments, where I'm restricted to watching because my skills are rusty.

John Miller, co-founder of Super League, said:

“We saw our own kids playing video games, and we thought there has to be a more social, communal way to do this. People don’t want to be playing alone in their homes. They want to be playing together, working side by side with their teammates to compete against other teams. We knew movie theaters were a natural fit, but even we were surprised by the tremendous response to the summer preseason tour.”

The firm just ended their Series B financing, and while they didn't disclose how much money was raised SuperData Research has reported that eSports generates $621 million annually. There's huge potential to turn local theaters into digital colosseums, if players bite. Would you head to a movie theater to compete, or are you more comfortable playing from home?
