Mabinogi Mobile Launches in Korea March 27

Nexon has announced Mabinogi Mobile, a reimagined version of its 2004 anime-style MMORPG, will launch in Korea on March 27, 2025, with pre-registration now open on iOS and Android. The game, developed by Nexon subsidiary devCAT Studio, retains the original’s focus on social activities like fishing, camping, and player-run economies while streamlining combat and customization for mobile devices. A PC version will also be available, supporting cross-play.

What’s New in Mabinogi Mobile?

  • Mobile Optimization: Simplified controls for on-the-go play, though the PC version offers traditional keyboard/mouse support.
  • Expanded Social Systems: Group activities like orchestral performances (a hallmark of the original) and seasonal festivals.
  • Story Overhaul: A new narrative set in the same universe, targeting both veterans and newcomers.

The original Mabinogi, released in 2004, stood out for its hybrid life-simulation and fantasy combat. Players could compose music, take on part-time jobs, or age their characters dynamically—a rarity in early MMORPGs. While never a mainstream hit globally, it cultivated a niche following, particularly in Korea and among anime RPG enthusiasts. Despite its age, it's still in service even today both in Korea and abroad. The global English version still gets updated and is currently running a collaboration event with Frieren until March 6, 2025.

Nexon’s mobile push follows its success with MapleStory Mobile (2022) and aligns with industry trends to modernize older IPs. However, Mabinogi’s quirky charm poses unique challenges: Will mobile-friendly streamlining alienate purists who loved its sandbox complexity?

Availability & Future Plans

No global release date has been announced, but Nexon typically tests Korean MMORPGs locally before expanding. Personally, I'm looking forward to giving this one a chance. Especially since the game has an emphasis on social elements and non-combat gameplay.

For now, Korean fans can pre-register on the official website.
